Two years have passed since the Battle of the Five Armies, Middle Earth is much the same as it always was and yet, in ways that those who live there cannot even begin to understand, it has changed beyond recognition...
Erebor has been returned to its former glory and the halls echo once more with the sounds off hammers striking metal, pickaxes striking rock, and the general chatter and laughter that is the trademark of a prosperous city. But who sits at the head of this resurrected kingdom? Who sits on the throne? The great King under the Mountain, the Slayer of the White Orc, the mighty Thorin Oakenshield who, with his nephews and his companions at his side, sits under the light of the Arkenstone and presides over the home he fought so hard for.
Dale is prospering too. Having used its share of the treasure of Erebor to rebuild, it has once again become a center for trade and wealth now flows into to it from the Lonely Mountain and from the Kingdom of Mirkwood and from all around Middle Earth. The rebuilt city has become one of the beating hearts of Middle Earth once more. And at its head stands Bard the Bowman. Dragon Slayer, a hero of the Battle of Five armies, and now King of Dale he his city with a fair hand, a kind heart, and a good head.
Lake-town, after having been all but destroyed by Smaug, is struggling back to its feet. The Master and his servant, Alfrid, stole most of the treasure given to Lake-town as compensation, leaving barely enough for the then homeless refugees to survive by and they found themselves relying on the charity of Bard and the people of Dale. It will take some time before Lake-town reaches the same heights as Dale or Erebor in terms of wealth and prosperity but, already, trade is starting to flourish again.
The Elves of Mirkwood returned to Greenwood and now live in an ominous peace. The spiders have vanished, the necromancer has left its boarders, and the darkness and sickness that plagues it has been pushed back for a time. The elves though are uneasy; they know that it is the calm before the storm but they do not know when the storm will break, where it will fall, or how much destruction in will leave in its path.
And what of Bilbo, the hero of "The Hobbit"? A short time after the Battle of the Five Armies he traveled home to the Shire which, unsurprisingly, had changed not at all and was still content to move at the same slow pace it always had. But perhaps change is on its way... As well as riches beyond most Hobbits' imaginings and tales to tall to be true, Bilbo brought back something else from his adventures. Something dark. Something dangerous. Something that holds the fate of the world in its cold metal and twisted magic.
So Middle Earth has changed very little and yet, it has changed completely. At the moment the world lives on in relative peace but soon, but not as soon as some might think, something will come from the shadows and change the very fabric of the place that is Middle Earth...
For the master of evil himself, the Lord of the Ring, the Necromancer lives on in Mordor, planning and plotting, growing ever stronger and able to reach ever further. Sauron bides his time but he will not wait forever.
