Reassured that Astridr had no problems with being left alone for a little while Kíli turned and set off on his way once more. This having been said, Kíli doubted that she wanted to be left alone for too long, especially stuck in a pig's bum as she was, so he made sure to keep a quick pace as he retraced his footsteps back to his little hidey hole. He’d made it about half way back to the clearing where he’d hidden his things when something caught his eye; some of the bark had been scraped off some of the trees far above the head-height. Strange…. His interest piqued, Kíli altered his path so that he could pass by the damaged trees and run his hand, which could only just reach the surprisingly deep grooves, along the indents in the trunk. Strips of the bark seemed to have been carved off by something which left behind small strips of something which felt a little like velvet. Looking around he saw that the foliage neat the trees was damaged as well, twigs and branches snapped as though something large had pushed its way through. Pausing for a brief moment Kíli crouched down on his haunches and ran his hand over the ground. He had his suspicions but …. Surely not?
His fingertips caught in a deep groove in the mud, hidden by some recently churned leaves but still as fresh as anything. Brushing the leaves aside Kíli found himself staring at a deep hoof print, only slightly small than his hand.
A deer! No, not a deer. Better than a deer. A stag!
Kíli held very still, slowly reached behind him to take hold of his bow and begin tracking his quarry. His hand grasp at thin air. Of course it did, he’d left his bow with Astridr.
Astridr!
Shaken from the excitement that had come with the realisation that there was a stag somewhere very nearby Kíli straightened from his crouch with a sigh. This was no time to go hunting, not when his friend needed his help. Reluctantly Kíli turned his back on the trail and headed back towards where he’d left his pack. He threw one last glance over his shoulder. It was a pity he wasn’t able to go after the stag, it would be quite the prize to take home after his hunting trip.
It would have also meant that he’d get to spend a good part of the day with Fee. The stag would have been too big for him to drag it home and take care of the carcass all by himself so he’d be able to have an excuse for asking Fee to help him. Surely even Loní wouldn’t be able to find a reason to object?
His feet dragged slightly on his way back to the clearing but he picked up the pace when thought of Astridr.
When he finally reached the clearing where he’d left his pack Kíli quickly went over to the hollow tree he’d hidden it in and pulled it out. Rooting around Kíli felt his hand come in to contact with the soft, worn leather of his carving kit. It was an old thing, stitched up quite a few time and covered in scratches, and Kíli knew that one day he would have to replace it before it fell apart completely but he wanted to keep it with him for as long as possible. It had been a gift from Fíli and whilst the tools had changed over time but the case had stayed the same.
It was something very precious indeed.
Smiling and cradling his priceless bundle in his arms (almost like he would cradle a babe) Kíli began to make his way back toward where his friend was stuck in a pig's bum.
